How to layer clothing for your activity

For the mountains and sport, dress in layers. The first layer – a technical base layer or T-shirt – wicks sweat away from your body. The second layer – a sweatshirt or gilet – holds in the warmth. The third layer – a jacket or coat – protects you from wind, rain and snow. You then add or remove layers to suit the weather and your pace.

For the mountains and hiking

Next to the skin, wear a technical T-shirt or an all-season base layer, and over it a light fleece jacket in TECNOPOLAR® or a stretchy powerfleece jacket. On top, take an uninsulated outdoor jacket with a TERATEX® membrane and a water column of 15,000–20,000 mm. For your legs, choose lightweight outdoor trousers, SOFTSHIELD® softshell trousers for cold and wind, and insulated waterproof trousers in winter.

For skiing and snowboarding

Under your ski jacket, wear winter base layers and a light fleece or powerfleece jacket. Women’s ski jackets have a TERATEX® or DERMIZAX™ membrane with a water column of 10,000–30,000 mm, and almost all are rated down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. Most ski trousers have a TERATEX® 20000 ELP membrane (20,000 mm). Don’t forget ski gloves and a hat or headband.

For cross-country skiing and winter running

Cross-country skiing warms you up more than downhill skiing, so choose thinner layers and put breathability before warmth. As a mid-layer, a powerfleece jacket or a Nordic sports gilet with insulated front and back panels is enough, with a light Nordic jacket on top. For your legs, wear close-fitting multisport softshell trousers or insulated waterproof leggings.

For the city and everyday wear

For everyday wear, cotton T-shirts, cotton sweatshirts and flannel shirts work well. For winter, choose a winter coat – most are rated down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale – or a quilted jacket with FURTHERM synthetic insulation. In autumn and spring, a softshell coat or a light waterproof parka will do the job, and on colder days, so will a winter gilet over a sweatshirt.

For summer and sport

For summer hikes, there are lightweight outdoor shorts and skorts; for running and fitness, leggings, technical tank tops and T-shirts. Most summer and sports clothing has DRYFOR technical fibre, which draws sweat to the surface of the fabric, where it evaporates quickly. For the water, there is swimwear and a UV T-shirt with UPF 50+ sun protection.

What to look for

  • Weather – for rain and wet snow, choose clothing with a membrane and a stated water column. With TERATEX® membranes, the number in the name is the water column in mm, so TERATEX® 10000 has 10,000 mm. A water-repellent fabric can only handle a short shower.
  • Temperature – the warmth of jackets, coats and gilets is shown on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale: down to 0 °C, down to −10 °C, down to −20 °C and down to −30 °C and below. If you often stand around in winter or get cold easily, choose a model one level warmer.
  • Activity – when you move fast, breathability and stretch are what count; when walking slowly or standing still, it’s mainly the insulation.
  • Fabric next to the skin – for sport, choose technical synthetics that wick sweat. Cotton is comfortable for everyday wear, but it holds moisture and then feels cold when it’s chilly.
  • Fit – the classic Regular fit predominates; the close-fitting Slim fit is found mainly on leggings and some sports trousers, the looser Oversized fit on some jackets and sweatshirts.
  • Size – compare your measurements with the size chart; for longer jackets and coats, measure your hips too and allow room for an extra layer.

Besides clothing, the Women’s section also has gloves, hats and headbands, sports and outdoor shoes, and sandals.

Frequently asked questions

How should women layer clothing for the mountains and the slopes?

Wear three layers: a technical base layer that wicks sweat, a warm fleece or gilet, and a jacket with a membrane on top. For the slopes, choose a ski jacket and ski trousers with a water column of 10,000–30,000 mm; for hiking, a lighter, uninsulated outdoor jacket, with warmth added underneath in layers. For cross-country skiing and winter hikes, you can wear insulated waterproof leggings instead of trousers.

What should women wear for cross-country skiing to avoid getting too hot or too cold?

Wear fewer layers than on the slopes, because cross-country skiing warms you up quickly. Start with a technical T-shirt or a lightweight base layer, add a powerfleece jacket or a Nordic sports gilet for warmth, and top it off with a light Nordic jacket with insulated front and back panels. On your legs, close-fitting multisport softshell trousers or insulated leggings work well; in freezing weather, add a headband and gloves.

What do the numbers 10000 to 30000 in the names of women’s jackets and trousers mean?

The number after TERATEX® is the water column in millimetres: models with TERATEX® 10000 ELP have 10,000 mm, those with TERATEX® 20000 ELP 20,000 mm. SOFTSHIELD® 10000 softshell has a water column of 10,000 mm and a breathability of 10,000 g/m²/24 h; the DERMIZAX™ membrane has no number in its name, and its water column is 30,000 mm. The higher the number, the heavier and longer the rain the fabric can withstand; taped seams and waterproof zips matter just as much.

How do I choose the right size in NORDBLANC women’s clothing?

Measure your bust, waist and hips and compare the measurements with the NORDBLANC size chart; for longer jackets, coats and parkas, the hips matter most. With jackets and coats, allow room for a sweatshirt or base layer underneath, whereas leggings and base layers should fit close to the body. The fit tells you how a garment sits: Regular is a classic fit, Slim fit is close-fitting and Oversized is looser.
